It's More Fun In the Philippines!

Today, the Philippine Department of Tourism launched its new brand campaign, causing the Philippine Twitter world to go a-flutter.
#It'sMoreFunInThePhilippines went viral immediately, trending worldwide. Even as I am writing this now, it is still trending in the Philippines.

Controversies
Within hours of the launch, someone was able to dig up this old ad that ran around 60 years ago in Switzerland and folks started questioning the originality of the launched brand.

I just love how Pinoys and the DOT secretary answered this controversy:

Aside from this, there were also some tweets which I will no longer post here that were true cynics, saying it's fun in the Philippines but posting scenarios making the country look less desirable. I say to them in the words of Jim Paredes:
Guys, we all know what you are saying is true. But you are missing the objective of the brand campaign.  If you have nothing nice to say, don't include the @DOTPhilippines' It's More Fun In the Philippines hashtag anymore.

So True
Given all these negativity that still found its way over such a very positive brand, @DOTPhilippines gave another tweet that "hands down" supported why this is such a working brand:
The brand really challenges everyone to participate and at the same time, it gives a sneak peek to potential tourists of what is in store for them.

My Top 7 Favorite Tweets
I am radiant with Filipino pride as I read all the entries that our fellow Pinoys (and even non-Pinoys) gave to prove why it is truly more fun in the Philippines. Sharing with you my favorites.

7. Food Related Tweets
Yes, may product placement.

And because I have been craving for dirty ice cream in a bun for the longest time...

6. Pepe Smith VS Mick Jagger

So the next hashtag to trend should be #moveslikepepe

5. Amidst everything, we do not give up!
As a famous Mariah Carey song says: "I can make it through the rain, I can stand up once again..."
A possible theme song for such a resilient race.
Of course, the music video needs to have rain on it. Given its title.
 4. Funny Truths

We see the funny in such scenarios. If you look at this closely, it might not be the best of what the Philippines can offer but it shows how tough we are as a people, able to shrug off scary messages and see them as just signs on how to function in the metropolis.

3. Pinoy People

It just goes to show that we, as a people, are generally full of smiles and hugs. XOXO, Philippines

2. MMDA
The @MMDA Twitter team is really doing a good job in helping motorists. That is why this tweet is so true! Now I just wait for the MMDA BlackBerry app and all will be perfect. *hint, hint*

1. The sights

Of course the top entry, though not a tweet, comes from the DOT site itself. Wordplay high five!

What do YOU think makes this hashtag #It'sMoreFunInThePhilippines true?

bakit ba kasi dapat pa nating palitan every pag-iiba ng namumuno yung logo, sa totoo lang type ko pa rin yung wow philippines ni Dick Gordon

LoL.. rock on, Pepe Smith, rock on! I grew up abroad and while my childhood rocked, the peeps here are the warmest. We're extremes, tayong mga Pinoy... laging feeling distant sa mga issues pero we band together when it matters. :D

I love this post! :) I'm not really super loving the new slogan, but I'm definitely supporting it. The people, the mixed culture, the food, the adventures, the malls, the beaches.. I can go on and on 'cause #It'sMoreFunInThePhilippines

Shirgie Scf said...

Oh no..is this a rip off again? and again?...anyway, I think we still have the right to use it..so go DOT...use the slogan...

Jim Balunday said...

we really can turn around the table. despite the controversy, we can show to the world that it is "more" fun in the Ph. continue to support DOT :) great post

@tatess - IMHO, even though DOT was not "first" in using this logo, (even some UP folks are claiming stake that they thought of itsmorefunindiliman) they still made it work and the people using social sites are helping in creating a buzz for the RP. I just hope someone will keep track and keep this campaign alive. :) we can help for sure as bloggers... but someone to ensure that the campaign is kept alive, I do hope DOT thought of that :)

@shirgie - yes yes!

@jim - thanks!
